Warhammer 40K 6th Edition Release Date! Maybe?

On 8 March, 2012 by Lee @ ROTDOG

Patiently waiting for the new rules.

Take a look at this: http://www.games-workshop.com/MEDIA_CustomProductCatalog/m2300001a_2012_public_calendar_07.03.12.pdf

This is the next six months of GW events at Warhammer World.  Couple of interesting things on there, what is College of Artisans and How do I get a place in an Imperial Armour War March?

Take a look at the weekend of July 14th/15th.  A studio open day followed by Warhammer 40k Cataclysm.  What do you think that is eh? There have been whisperings of 6th edition 40k coming out in July so this may be the real deal.

It may just be an unannounced event but there is historical precedent.

A new rulebook is generally released in the summer with the new box set following in autumn.

Finally we may get to see what if anything from the wish listing leak appears in the rules to huge choruses of "I told you so" from whichever camp was right. If this is the real deal I am interested in what cataclysm is.

Even as far back as 3rd edition there were rumours that the story was being moved forward, that the Emperor would die and Ultramar break off from the Imperium and the western edge of the galaxy is sucked into chaos.

Whilst I am not expecting any significant move forward we should remember that the 'modern' age of 40k was reclassified as The End Times with the revelation that the Golden Throne is definitely broken down.

Time will tell but best get those new armies started now if you want them ready for the new rule set, we are!

  • My FLGS was supposing this was true as well….     evidence mounts….

  • Any news on 6th edition is a good thing and I sincerely hope Lee has called this one correctly because other rumours flying around about the new edition make it seem very appealing. The most oft occuring rumour I have dug up suggests the starter set will be Dark Angels vs Chaos. Now, no matter what you think of the DA, a new release for them means a new codex, which they are sorely in need of. As for the Chaos, no one is certain what this Chaos will entail – some are suggesting it might be some kind of renegades akin to the old Lost and the Damned codex which, from my POV will be amazing!

As for the story moving forward, my take on it is slightly different. I think the revelation that the Golden Throne (Golden, not Iron, must remember that) is broken down isnt so much the story progressing, rather being re emphasised to really establish the whole concept of the Imperium teetering on the brink of collapse.

The Emperor dying WOULD be a big shake up though, hopefully as long as everyone involved in writing it had forgotten about the ridiculous Star Child/Illuminati/Sensei crap that was flying around prior to 3rd edition. No Emperor would mean no Astronomicon and the sudden isolation of huge parts of the Imperium may just cause some Space Marines to re think their alleigance. Of course the perfect catalyst the Ultramar seperatist movement and a pefect excuse to start using your space marines against other marines.

But, saying all that, I dont think we will see the Emperors death in the fluff any time soon. It would make not only the entire flavour of alot of army books totally redundant, but think of the knock on effect to huge areas of the IP like the Fantasy Flight roleplaying games? You cant just find another Emperor, the Throne will fry anyone else who tries to use its power before long. (Reference the Horus Heresy, Malcador didnt last longer than it took the Emperor to nail Horus and he was arguably the second most powerful psyker alive at the time). Without the astronomicon, the Imperium will not function. Sure, certain ships with really good navigators might be able to function without it, but 99% of commerical, industrial, civilan and military space travel will become impossible. The Imperium needs their corpse to keep their fluff alive and as a focus for the Chaos gribblies to get all worked up over.

I personally see a new Chaos villain on the rise or a large scale Black Crusade in the fluff. If the Chaos codex is the first to be released in 6th edition, we may get to see signs of the defining flavour of 6th edition in that, so I will be keeping my ear to the ground to see what the rumour mill generates on this one.

  • I have heard the DA vs Chaos box set rumours.  It would add sense to the White Dwarf spine picture.  It would break the contrasting armies rule that has held sway over the box sets till now.  A cynic could say that an all 3+ ary box is an illustration of the state of the game.

Craven the Illuminati/Star Children idea is still around though in a different form.  The eternals of the Horus Heresy novels are an incarnation of that idea I believe.  They are as old as the Emperor but without his powers.  I think they are akin to but not related to the Emperor.  John Grammaticus is one and the other appears in a recent book so I don't want to spoil.

'Little Horus' Aximand has been put forward as another top tier character who will appear in the codex.
